Are you taking Your Fish Oils? |
Fish oil supplementation has become all the rage because of the wide range of health benefits they provide. The key to the benefits is omega 3 fatty acid, which is a building block the body uses to build all cells. Because of this, fish oil benefits every system in the body.
Researchers have found that if the body does not have enough omega 3, it would build cells using another building block – omega 6. Cells built using omega 6 differ dramatically than those made with omega 3, which can lead to problems in the body, especially neurological conditions. Americans are notoriously deficient in omega 3 because of our overly processed, nutritionally poor diets.
Fish Oils have been shown to be beneficial in neurological and psychological conditions, preventing diabetes and diabetic damage, preventing vision loss due to macular degeneration, and many, many other conditions (heart disease, ADHD, IBS, schizophrenia, colon cancer, breast cancer, etc.).
Everyone can benefit from supplementation with fish oils, including children. There is a reason your mother made you take your cod liver oil! Fortunately, fish oil now comes in much tastier options.
Fish oil is derived from cold water fish, such as macarel, tuna, and salmon. However, some of the potential of the fish oil is destroyed by cooking, and one reason experts have advocated getting most of your fish oil from a supplement vs. eating the fish is the danger of high levels of mercury present in fish. To avoid this, it is important to use a pharmaceutical grade fish oil from a fish source that is not contaminated with mercury, lead, or other heavy metals.
The main health benefits from fish oil are derived from DHA and EPA. Another reason to use a pharmaceutical grade fish oil is because many of the fish oil supplements on the market have very low levels of DHA, making them less effective.
When you buy fish oil supplements, it should contain the three types of omega 3 fatty acids: DHA, EPA, and DPA. It is also helpful if the supplement contains vitamin E. Also, note the dosage amount on the bottle – some dosages require 3 pills three times a day, others require 1. It all depends on the concentration of fish oil in the pill.
