Most of you already know that the diet of an ordinary person is not natural. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Between the processing, and the genetic modification, from the pesticide application to the hormone supplementation, our food has taken a turn for the worse. Many have even applied the word “frankenfood” to the stuff that you buy in the grocery store or pick up from a drive through. Remember, the more highly processed a food is, the lower its nutritional value. The term “you are what you eat” is never more true than today. In the past, a healthy balanced diet has consisted of whole grains, vegetables, some fruit and some wild game.
Unfortunately, that is not the case today, but fortunately, there are steps you can take to remedy this. There are tips listed below to help you shop more healthfully for you and your family. In the meantime, as you change your buying habits, there are high grade nutraceuticals available to help you “bridge the nutritional gap”. Healthy natural bars, teas, kosher foods, and other products are all available. Work with a qualified healthcare practitioner to determine the best nutritional program for you.
Buyer beware: often the label “all natural” on food does not mean that the food is organic, pesticide free, or even good for you! There is no USDA labeling requirements for foods that advertise as “all natural” and you, the consumer, must be empowered with knowledge to make decisions about the food and drink you ingest.
To truly eat “all naturally”, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

Tips to Eat Healthfully |
Choose organic - When a product is USDA certified organic, you can be sure you are getting an organically grown product. The USDA has strict guidelines about what can and can’t be labeled organic, and the certification process takes years. Only companies dedicated to organic farming will go to the lengths necessary to get the label.
Buy Free Range - Animals that are raised free range are not only healthier, but the less intensive farming practices (which is called factory farming) are better for the environment and the farming methods are cruelty free. That ensures that the meat and eggs you consume are better for your body as well as better for the earth.
Buy Non-GMO - Europe has banned all GMO, or genetically modified products from their shelves because of the unknown health risks associated with genetically modified food. In the U.S., food growers and distributors are not required to tell the consumer if the product is GMO or not. To eat GMO free, you have to be a super sleuth. Unfortunately, most processed foods may contain GMO based foods.
Buy local and eat with the seasons Your local farmers market is a great place to buy delicious fresh produce that is less likely to mass produced and more likely to be pesticide free. You are also supporting your local economy when you do this, and reducing the strain on our earth by eating things that were shipped locally, instead of food that is shipped around the world.
