What are dietary supplements?
We have all heard the words "don't forget to take your vitamins". We have especially heard this from our parents and our physicians, though some of us do not really understand the importance of the necessity of dietary supplements.
A dietary supplement is defined as a product which supplements the ingredients in the food that you eat, and consists of elements which include vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, and other substances. These are mostly available in pills, capsules, tablets, or liquid forms. They usually carry a label which is marked as "dietary supplement".
Vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids are different types of dietary supplements containing natural products which are essential to keep us functioning smoothly, maintaining the wellbeing of all our body. Herbal supplements have medicinal properties and have been used in the Eastern world since ancient times. Herbs can be effective in dealing with various health conditions including skin problems, liver functionality, and bone health.
Why use Vitamins, Minerals and Herbal Supplements?
Vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements fulfill important needs of our body. Many of us have a tendency to have vitamin and essential mineral deficiencies which may result in a number of health related problems. This can occur even when consuming a healthy diet since diet alone may not provide all the necessary nutrients in our body. These health related problems can be reduced by supplementing our diet with essential nutrients and regular exercise.
What are the Benefits of Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements?
We often ask ourselves if we really need to take nutritional supplements. We tend to evaluate our health on how we feel at present. However, we may develop health conditions in the future which have been growing silently for years without showing any symptoms. We may feel fatigued or develop chronic illnesses and start taking medications to alleviate our symptoms. Proper intake of vitamins and minerals, regular exercise, and other preventive measures may play a big role in preventing these illnesses and can also promote a healthier lifestyle as we grow older.
Some of us suffer from high stress which could result in physical, psychological or mental disorders. Vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements may help us to stay healthy in the midst of a highly stressful lifestyle by improving our sleep, stress response, and immune system. Nutrients can help us to boost our immune system which forms a resistive force to illnesses and diseases. For example, a healthy dose of Vitamin C taken regularly can help reduce the occurrence of colds and other infections.
The stress that we go through in our daily lives, the chemicals that we breathe in and consume, and an unhealthy life-style could contribute to the formation of toxins in our body. Vitamins and supplements can help our body deal with these toxins and reduce their potentially harmful impact. In order to maintain good health and vitality, nutritional supplements play an important role in our well being.
